The East Coast, West Coast Rivalry


The match lasted only seconds, but the events following it, still ring loudly in the ears of people today. .
             Shakur arrived to the fight at 8:30 p.m. accompanied by armed bodyguards from the Piru Bloods, a Compton street gang employed by Knight, working for Death Row. After the fight, Shakur walked up to congratulate Tyson on his victory. Upon doing this, Shakur's bodyguards noticed a rival Crip member (Orlando "Baby Lane- Anderson), responsible for assaulting and robbing one of Shakur's bodyguards weeks before. Before Shakur could be stopped, he punched Anderson, knocking him to the ground. Shakur's bodyguards then joined in the assault, Knight too, before the 30-second melee could be stopped by security guards, and caught on camera (Ibid.). After the assault, Orlando fled to the Crips for retaliation. They arranged for a meeting with Smalls, who allegedly promised a payment of 1 million dollars in exchange for the death of Shakur (www.philadelphiaweekly.com/archives/article.asp?ArtID=4282).

             Later that evening, Shakur, Knight, and the Piru Bloods were traveling to club 662 (punched in on a phone 662 spells mob). Leading their convoy, was Knight's black BMW, with Shakur in the passenger seat. A white Cadillac pulled up alongside of the vehicle, spraying the passenger side door with bullets. Shakur took 4 bullets to the chest, and died 6 days later (Ibid.). .
             In 1995, Biggie Smalls, a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G., was gunned down in a drive-by shooting while leaving a Vibe magazine party after the Soul Train Music Awards (www.home.net/~manniac/). As hundreds of people watched, Smalls and his entourage drove out of Peterson Automotive Museum in the mid-Wilshire district. Smalls sat in the passenger side of a green Chevy Suburban, while Sean (Puffy) Combs, (The CEO of Small's label, Bad Boy Entertainment) rode in a vehicle ahead of him. The vehicle Puffy was riding in ran through a stoplight as it was turning red, forcing Small's Suburban to stop and wait for the light to change.
