Patriarchal Relationships in Genesis

Moreover, power conveyed in the story only solidifies that fear can help provoke others in a patriarchal society. In another instance where God is feared by his son through power is in the episode of Abraham and his sacrifice of Isaac. God tells Abraham, "take your son, your favored one, Isaac whom you love and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and put it on Isaac Abraham picked up the knife to slay his son"" (22:2-9). Abraham and God, are father and son that perfectly conveys a follower and a leader through unrivaled power which results in fear. Abraham is afraid of God so he does anything that God wants him to do even if it is at a cost of his own son. In my opinion, God is not a caring father because no father would make his son go through the killing and slaying of his own son. Also, threatening Abimelech with death as a father shows that God has no remorse for his children according to Genesis. Although God is powerful, some may argue that even with all his power he is not truly powerful because most of his bidding is not directly done by him rather it is another character in the bible that follows with his wishes. Sure, we can argue that his power may come from manipulation, but is that really a power that man should fear? I believe power that patriarchal relation fear the most is brute force. Men are usually associated with power that relates to physical strength; thus, God in the bible never physically forced anyone to do anything which only proves that he may not be as powerful.
Respect in patriarchal relation is another aspect of power that is portrayed in the book of Genesis. In my previous paragraph, I showed how fear is used to gain someone's will and use it against themselves. On the other hand, respect is another way to shift one's perspective and gain trust among others to do one's bidding.
