The concrete reason that motivated civil war can only be traced to the motivation between greed and grievance. Usually, rebellion is triggered when rebels has the desire for wealth by seizing vital resources that fetch the nation huge money. While another form of rebels' desires to get rid of certain people or ethnic that has been ruling the nation arbitrarily, or some people with unfair governance (Collier 1999). Greed and grievance are an important element that is inseparable in explaining conflicts that escalate to Civil War. It has been a phenomenon that countries that have witnessed conflict were due to the motive of some group to take opportunities as rebellion against the government usually starting with grievance (Collier and Hoeffler 2004). Once a country falls into the trap of civil war, it becomes a continuous conflict. This is the main reason why countries that witness conflict are suffering from various problems that leave them with an indelible mark which future generation live on with (Collier 2003:4). It has been several decades long of conflict in Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone. However, British intervention through their military in Sierra Leone has helped to curtail the power of the rebels. .
Various conflicts officially ended at one point but it has not completely ended yet, present issues have cost thousands of souls to be impoverished, high malnutrition and other disease with 19% of child death under the age of five in Congo between 2006 to 2007 (The Guardian, 23 January 2008). Charles Taylor's trial and conviction by the International Criminal Court for aiding and abetting civil war in Sierra Leone lingers on in peoples mind with a victim saying "This is a happy day. I have not been able to do many things because my arms were cut off, but today I am happy" (BBC April 26, 2012). This explains that grievance might have been a useful tool in chasing out the government and shows the footprint left in the mind of the wounded souls when Taylor was sentenced.
