In Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont in 1994, is a very moving story about hope, trust and the power of friendship. It portrays a wrongfully accused Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, who tries to break out of jail. In a Similarly but different film Escape from Alcatraz directed by Don Siegel in 1979, is a true story about the only escape from Alcatraz prison attempted by inmate Frank Morris played by Clint Eastwood. In both films the main goal is to escape out prison and both inmates in the films will do any and everything to break out of prison. Through manipulation, street smarts and wit anything is possible in these prisons which is illustrated clearly in both films. By comparing these two films we see that prison life in a real prison and the stereotypes that today's society has of prisons are actually similar.
Andy Dufresne came to Shawshank prison in 1947. He was wrongfully convicted of killing his own wife and is sentenced to a long term imprisonment in Shawshank prison. Before coming to prison he was vice-president of a large Portland bank. As soon as Andy arrives at the prison the inmates are betting on who will crack first among the "fresh meat" to arrive at the prison. A man named "Red" who could get you anything you wanted in prison gambled that Andy would crack first. Andy did not crack though, and gains a lot of respect for it. In a place like Shawshank, hope is a dangerous thought for many. To Andy though hope will never die and in prison no place could ever get the best of him. With a .
really small hammer used by rock climbers, he inches his way to freedom night by night over a period of decades. He disguises the hole he is making in the wall with a Hugh poster of Rita Hayworth. In time Andy becomes a valuable asset to the warden as he lauder's money from all his illegal activities.
