Anorexia Nervosa and Distorted Beauty

It's sad that we favor show characters based off of appearance as opposed to their on screen personalities, and then aspire to be like them. It's even worse that only 10 percent of female actresses are overweight; this is very disproportional to the overall obesity rate of women in the country. Does Hollywood favor thin actresses as well? Although it's hard to find unbiased evidence to support this, it wouldn't be surprising if this were true based on these statistics and the way our society has become. .
Magazines are another substantial influence in women's body image. Research strongly suggests that being thin is promoted in print media. It's seems impossible to stand in line at a grocery store without noticing a rack full of magazines containing images of underweight models or celebrities. In a study done by Nichter, adolescent girls said that their ideal body came from fashion magazines targeted at them. The ideal teenage girl was identified as being 5'7 weighing 100 pounds (Thompson and Heinberg 341). In other words, adolescent girls dream of being skin and bones. A woman having these proportions is clearly unrealistic and incredibly dangerous. The media should hold no power over our society; yet it does every day. The media drives our young women, and even men, in the wrong direction. The message Hollywood sends us is strong and holds the ability to mentally destroy some of us. .
Anorexia is considered to be a psychiatric disorder in which both men and women suffer from an intense fear of weight gain (Webihealth). Researchers and psychologists found the most common characteristics of an anorexic female. Although these characteristics are found in many Anorexics, this disease has a variety of victims that may not all be represented in this generalization (Anorexia Nervosa 2). Research has shown that the average anorexic female is a neat and quiet woman who is possibly overly sensitive to rejection; she may feel inferior to others and worry excessively ("Anorexia Nervosa" 2).
