The Mauryan Empire in ancient India is considered the first empire establishing an extensive unified culture. The duration of the Mauryan dynasty's rule was from approximately 325 B.C.E to 183 B.C.E. Included within the confines of India at that time was much of modern-day Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. This area was larger than any previously controlled within the Indian subcontinent. Through the unification of individual governing entities, the Mauryan Empire marked the first time that all of India had been brought together under one rule.
Ancient India, beginning around 600 B.C.E was divided into sixteen individually ruled kingdoms, the most powerful of which being Magadha. Magadha had conquered neighboring kingdoms, extending its control of northern India from the Bay of Bengal in the East to the Indus River valley in the West. The final ruler of the Nanda dynasty that controlled Magadha, Dhana Nanda, was an abrasive force with power derived from the threat of violence by way of an extensive army. After Alexander the Great conquered Persia, he led his Macedonian and Greek troops into Northwest India around 326 B.C.E attempting to further his reign by conquering Indian territories. The initial campaign changed the political dynamic of Northern India, but was brought to a halt when Alexander's troops heard rumors of Dhana Nanda's infantry awaiting the invader's arrival. Alexander the Great's army mutinied, refusing to attack, thus compelling Alexander to return to Macedonia where, on the way, he was met with an unexpected death in 323 B.C.E. The political vacuum remaining from the invasion and subsequent demise of Alexander the Great provided opportunity for the ruler of a growing state in the Ganges Valley to rise to power. .
Chandragupta Maurya benefited from the crisis caused by Alexander's invasion, utilizing the turmoil to expand his own territories. At approximately twenty-five years of age, between the years of 324 B.
For example, as stated in the textbook Invitation to World Religions, Ashoka, emperor of the Mauryan Dynasty's views are depicted: "The many edicts he (Ashoka) ordered disseminated throughout his empire, often carved on rock pillars, proclaimed his desire to promote moral purification and self-awareness, to end unnecessary violence done to animals, and to honor and respect all religious viewpoints" (Brodd 190). ...

In human nature there seems to be some innate requirement to create particular groups of people and to erect barriers that distinguish, encompass and protect these groups from others. Over time people have looked to a huge variety of features by which these collectives may be defined, groups have been and are classified along religious, economic, social and cultural lines to name but a few. There are a multitude of stimuli for the formation of these different distinguishing features, but once the features have been recognized and the group has been formed, the individual will cling to this gro...
