Service Experience - Cultural Competence

This is why it is important to not only know the information but also be able to interact with people of different cultures in order to be culturally competent. If you have all the information but do not know how to interact with different cultures in a way that does not insult them then you are still culturally incompetent. This is why it is important to have all aspects and understanding of your cultural knowledge, other cultures besides the stereotypes, and the way to interact in order to fulfill the definition and full understanding of cultural competence. Once someone fulfills this and is culturally competent than they have the ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures. .
             To evaluate myself for the first part of the definition of my knowledge of myself and my actions is very important. I have both proficiencies and limitations in my own knowledge. I feel like I have both of these sides because of the people the people that surround me. For example I think that some of my limitations come from the fact that I grew up in a predominantly Italian culture based town. This restricted to only knowing those cultures and not really having to expand my ideas much past this way of living and mentality. I think that this Irish and Italian culture is one that is also predominantly at Providence College also and this can limit me but the people I have chosen to surround myself has allowed me to broaden my own knowledge and become more aware of my actions. Where as before I never really paid attention o how I acted or what I knew about other cultures, living in a suite with people that are come from very different cultures like Egyptian and Haitian. The different traditions and beliefs culturally have allowed me to understand my actions and knowledge of other cultures. By understanding their cultures and being immersed in their way of life has helped me be more aware of my knowledge and how much I did not know before coming to PC.
