For years I was just coasting through life, aimlessly, going wherever the wind took me. Then, my sixth grade year I was introduced to something that completely changed my life for the better. Although the arts are not always looked upon as an important aspect of childhood education, it can be some of the most important skills that a child can learn. "Music helps students activate prior knowledge and contributes to achievement in fundamental motor skills" (Deli, Bakle, and Zachopoulou, 2006). Music education classes do not receive nearly enough credit for the benefits in children's lives, and I believe that with public knowledge of these benefits, this issue can change. Music helps the brain to function in unfamiliar ways, introducing skills such as perception, phonological memory, metacognitive knowledge, and mental imagery. Although music can be a difficult skill to learn, with todays technology and the social emotional support from music educators, music can be extremely beneficial in a child's life. I know this to be true because when I joined chorus, it changed mine.
Investigation.
Students are typically taught through an educational system known as STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in public schooling today. The new standard of education should be taught by STEAM, adding the "A " for arts (Shuler, 2012). Children deserve and need a balanced education in our economy today, to help them succeed in the working world. With educators around the world coming together, music instructors can give a better understanding of the importance of the arts through children's education. "We live during a time when an increasing number of adults experience multiple career shifts"" (Shuler, 2012). Students need a diverse education more now than ever before. In order for children to find their true passions and interests, it is important for students to have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of curriculum.
