Elizabeth Stanton - Inspirational Leader

In July 1848, Stanton helped.
establish the first women's rights convention, with over three hundred men and women in attendance. This moment in history help ignite the fight towards women's rights and gender equality in the future (Biography).
Elizabeth Stanton used her past and current experiences to motivate her to fight for a better future for her self and others. As a child, she watched her mom fulfill society's request by taking care of the family and attending to their home. Her father favored her older brother and this caused her to fight for his attention by excelling in male dominated areas. When she graduated school, she soon faced the reality of being a woman in the 1800s. Whether married (90% were) or single, a woman's life was confined to taking care of the house and family members (Michelle, n.d).Women at this time were seen as property to men. They could not receive any of the natural rights that were entitled to men. Women also received limited job opportunities and unfair pay. Since religion played an important role during the 1800s, rules and standards of society were based on the Bible. Many women in the Bible, such as the "Virgin Mary", are depicted as housewives who tended to the need of the family and home. In contrast, men were the providers and breadwinners, financially benefiting the family's needs. Women were seen as being too weak to handle manual labor whereas men were too strong to be caretakers. However, Stanton did not believe in the gender stereotypes. She believed a woman could be both a provider and caretaker. Willingness to her was the strength to be able to accomplish anything. Not being able to obtain the same opportunities and rights as men made her envision a better future for women to be able to compete on the same playing field without being judged and stereotyped.
Stantons speeches, novels and petitions motivated women to join her in the fight towards equality.
