Media Correlation with Body Dissatisfaction

Because individuals have emphasized the idea of perfection and put much importance to it, many now seek to meet those standards that society has set in order to be accepted into our culture. In the article, "The Effect of Experimental Presentation of Thin Media Images on Body Satisfaction: A Meta-Analytic Review" Lisa Groesz, Michael Levine, and Sarah Murnen explain, "This perfect body has flawless skin, a thin waist, long legs, and well-developed breasts" (2). Males and females struggle with meeting the standards since it is not very simple to change one's looks overnight. As individuals are growing up, they face many tribulations with what is known as body dissatisfaction because they are afraid of not being like those people portrayed through the media. As it is clarified by Rodin, Silberstein and Striegel-Moore in the article, "The Contribution of Peer and Media Influences to the Development of Body Satisfaction and Self-Esteem in Young Girls: A Prospective Study" written by Hayley Dohnt and Marika Tiggemann, "Body dissatisfaction, or the desire for thinness [and muscle building], is so prevalent among women [and men] and adolescent girls [as well as boys] that it is now described as a "normative discontent"" (929). This "drive for thinness" and being muscular has been "exacerbated" by the media, as explained by Sara B. Cohen in the article "Media Exposure and the Subsequent Effects on Body Dissatisfaction, Disordered Eating, and Drive for Thinness: A Review of the Current Research," throughout the years (58). Women, specifically, find it very hard to accept their bodies and admire themselves for who they are and how they look since men tend to frequently compliment women who are model-like; this in turn creates an idea in a females mind that they are not good or beautiful enough. When one happens to walk to by a mirror, it is common to stare at one's own reflection and pick out all of the flaws, rather than appreciate all the good qualities.
