Anarchists - Demanding the Impossible

It is argued that natural order can come about is there are appropriate social conditions. Collectivist anarchists have a hyper positive view of human nature and strongly believe that Anarchism would be practical in society. Bakunin said that "social solidarity is the first human law, freedom is the second." He argues that we are bound by a form of "natural law" and that due to this nature that we act in a "social" manner rather than an "individualistic" manner. Individual anarchists argue the rationality of members of society and their own calculated, long-term self interest. Godwin argues that the state can be replaced with "internal private judgement" and will argue that the state is evil and not needed in society. Another theorist, Stirner, suggests the state rips people of their natural egoism and as a result, the state is believed by some to control the behavior of individuals and force them into unnatural social relations. .
Anarchists argue that anarchism is not a unrealistic ideology as humans are individuals in which seek to help others in a collective manner, however, these views on human nature are unrealistic. Conservatives argue that humans are essentially limited and security seeking creatures drawn to the known, the familiar, the tried and the tested and therefore would be unable to flourish in a stateless society which anarchists argue is possible. Human beings are imperfect physically, morally and intellectually and as a result would not be able to cope in a society with no state. As well as conservatives, liberals hold a similar view and argue that anarchism is unrealistic as human beings are selfish, self-interested individuals out for their best interest without no consideration of others. Due to this nature, it would cause instability in society as individuals would be less willing to help others. Theorist Hobbs says that a stateless society would be "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.
