Book Review - The Once and Future King

"How can you have boundaries if you fly?. and the humans too, would have to stop fighting in the end, if they took the air " said Lyo-lyok the geese (170). Arthur then responded with the belief of fighting being "knightley " and enjoyable. The geese then told him that he was acting like a baby. Lyo-lyok believes that violence and fighting is an immature and childish way of ruling. She believes that it is unnecessary to try and overpower her own people because in the end it would be definitely better and successful to work together in order to create a better society. Lyo-lyok gives Arthur, a person who enjoys fighting, a different perspective of what should be and that is to not create violence to others, especially to the people. The badger explains to Arthur, "All embryos look very much the same. They are what you are before you are born and whether you are going to be a tadpole or a peacock or a cameleopard or a man, when you are an embryo you just look like a peculiarly repulsive and helpless human being"" (190). The badger intentions are to help Arthur have a better understanding of the others around him and who are often overpowered. He implies that humans did not originally set out to be masters of all animals, but that God gave them that blessing. The badger then asks Arthur a rhetorical question if he likes the geese or ants better, knowing Arthur preferring the geese. Resembling the ants, Arthur realizes that human qualities will not always be good qualities because of the horrible uses of "blessings " that God had given to man. Knowing all the lessons that Arthur has learned and experiences with the many societies based on different rulings, Arthur has come to a conclusion for how he should rule and that is to rule with kindness and righteousness. He now has a better understanding of showing compassion and helpfulness to his fellow people. Arthur learns how to unite the differences, accomplishments are to be learned properly and to be courageous and self-reliant.
