Feeding the World - Political and Financial

            The present food situation in the world is demonstrating the growing demand for food globally. This food crisis is a consequence of causing an increasing gap between the rich and poor, developing and the developed countries.
             When the Cold War was over, Europe had less need for a large storage of food as war seemed less likely to happen. At the same time growing population of those living in less economically developed countries (LEDCs). These people are poorer and hungrier and consequently suffer serious health problems such as malnutrition and starvation. The global food prices rose in 2008 (http://faostat3.fao.org/). One of the products which had a large increase was rice which resulted in riots in Africa and Asia. Even people in more economically developed countries (MEDC's) spent a large part of their income on food and daily essentials. .
             As a result, people either lower the quality of food, amount of food or spend more money trying to still afford the luxuries of high quality food. However the increase in food prices will affect the rest of the global or local economies. .
             "Genetic engineering can be a scary term to those that do not have all of the facts; little do they know that a great deal of the fresh produce and meats that they buy at the local supermarket comes as a result of exactly that. According to a 2002 Earth Island Journal article "Biotechnology is one of tomorrow's tools in our hands today. Slowing its acceptance is a luxury our hungry world cannot afford." (Robbins, 2002) It is important to realize that "Genetic engineering is a tool that has greatly affected agriculture and will continue to bring dramatic advances in crop and animal production. Biotechnology has improved the quality of food, feed, and fiber, and it often lowers production costs and provides for a safer farm environment." (Spears, 2011).
             The debate on genetic engineering has been going on for some time and is not likely to end anytime soon.
