Road Symbolism in the Works of Robert Frost

Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" are poems that both describe decisions or choices of life. "The Road Not Taken" is about a man experiencing life, on the other hand, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" is about a man wearied and saddened by life. In both poems the speaker has too choose between two paths in life. He used symbolism, figurative language, and sound in several of ways in both of his poems.
The road symbolizes the choices he has to make in his life. In the poem, "The Road Not Taken", the speaker has to make a huge choice in his life. The poem is about a person who comes across a fork in the road and he has to choose which way to follow. He thinks long and hard about which road he wants to take. He says, "And looked down as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth (4-5). He looks down both paths and after giving it much thought he chooses the road less traveled by. In "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" the journey in the woods symbolizes a life journey. The speaker has a choice to stay in the woods or to move on to where he is going. As they make a stop on the darkest evening of the year in the snowy woods, the horse gives his bells a shake because he is not certain as to why they have stopped where no farmhouse is near. He knows that he has to go but still contemplate on staying in the woods. Likewise, both poems have a big decision making process about which road would be better for them to take. .
The road and life are being compared as a metaphor in the poem "A Road Not Taken." It implies a difficult choice in a person's life that could offer him an easy or hard way out. He does not know what will happen with either road that he chooses. It is risky making up his mind about which way to choose because that is the first step of heading into success or failure in life.
