The Crucible - Theater to Film

A high portion of the movie was set outdoors. Scenes that involved townspeople and the protagonist (John Proctor) were set outside rather than inside. This is important to point out due to the fact that the setting within the play is set almost entirely indoors. There are not many scenes that actually take place outdoors. This effect enhances the movie as a whole but lacks credibility in the sense that there is rarely any time spent outside in the play and therefore would confuse many readers of the book due to there being nearly no time spent outside as the play version shows. Lastly, there was foreshadowing in the movie with the use of the setting. The rain and downpour foreshadowed that a negative event was going to take place. In the actual play, it does not mention rain pouring nor is there any foreshadowing that is portrayed using the setting or outside world. Not only is the setting a highlighted difference, but as are the characters within the two versions.
The character's during the play are significantly different than the same aspect in the film. Whether it was adding characters or certain characters actions, the characters were different in each variation of the play. Betty is more violent in the movie adaptation. She also attempts to jump out of a window, which does not happen in the play. Betty is more subtle in the book and is not so violent. "The words "going up to Jesus" are heard in the psalm and Betty claps her ears suddenly and whines loudly." (Pg. 24). Another character addition are the Proctor children. The Proctor children are briefly mentioned in the book. The reader knows little about them and are never exposed to them as they do not speak. However, in the movie adaptation, the children are seen talking for a short time and are witnessed crying and hugging their mother, (Elizabeth Proctor) as she is arrested for witchcraft. The children could have been added for a more dramatic effect in the movie but they lacked credibility due to the fact that they were not present in the book.
