A Kestrel For A Knave by Barry Hines

The teachers don't like Billy but the other children in the classroom do not like Billy too. They belittle him, make fun of him, insult him and hit him. Billy has a poor education at school but at home too, his father's absence is one of the main reasons and Mrs Casper is more a lover than a mother so she doesn't care of her son.
The social class (poverty): An important aspect of the novel is the presence of poverty. Billy's family should not, in fact, be very poor as Jud would be earning a good salary in the mine and Billy's mother also seems to be employed. The reason for Billy's apparent poverty is lack of care rather than lack of cash. Jud and Billy's mother clearly spends a large part of their money on bets and other things like this, but none of them seems to make much effort into providing home comforts for Billy.
All these contextual elements depicted by the author illustrate that Billy is a victim. .
Secondly, by his language Barry Hines demonstrates that Billy is a victim. Billy is depicted as "smaller" and "weaker' than the other boys. The author talks about him as "a brave little clown" which is a simile that describes Billy as ridiculous. Jud often uses an abusive language when addressing Billy; for example in the opening scene at wake « I said shut it » (addressing Billy to shut down the clock). Jud always insults his brother. Billy is often described as dirty and it seems he rarely washes. Billy is the « knave » in the title. Knaves is rather a pejorative word which generally describe thieves or liar. All these language choices are made to show to the reader Billy as a natural victim.
Finally, in his book, Barry Hines shows us that Billy can be someone else than a victim. Barry Hines shows us other characteristics of Billy. He demonstrates that he is "strong, resourceful and independent. Even though he is small and weak, he has also more endurance than the other as shown by the cold shower episode.
