Narratives of The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men

Thus, even something as trivial as Gatsby's signature takes on a majestic nature of it's own as a result of Nick's assumption of Gatsby. The inclusion of the phrase "majestic hand" shows that Nick is subscribing to his pre-conceptualized assumptions of Gatsby. In a contrasting impression of Gatsby that Nick bears towards the end of the book, we are able to observe how his assumption of Gatsby once again dictates his description of him. After the car accident that he assumes Gatsby is guilty of causing, he responds to Gatsby standing around Daisy's house by calling it "a despicable occupation" (Fitzgerald, 184). This immediate of association of Gatsby with evil and sinister actions reflects how Nick is once again, driven by his pre-set assumptions. This allusion of Gatsby to malevolence influences the reader to perceive him as the guilty murderer and as a result, despise him. .
The description of the characters in Of Mice and Men is not entirely objective either, and is not short of hyperbole and exaggeration. However, as the narration is done in the third person, the narrator's job is to describe the characters in such a way that the description conveys the general impression of that particular character formed by his counterparts and not that of the narrator. The narrator describes the way Lennie walks as "the way a bear drags his paws"" (Steinbeck, 19). This allusion of Lennie to a bear reinforces the common sentiment among the characters that he is more akin to an animal, with more brawns than brainpower. The allusion to an animal hence becomes one of Lennie's major character traits and thus it is crucial for the narrator to depict Lennie as such in his introduction. Unlike in The Great Gatsby, where the impression of Gatsby's character is constantly changing, the impression of Lennie's character remains relatively constant. When he kills Curley's wife he does so under the characterization of being a simpleton.
