Research Paper - Self Esteem

These social sites cause people to undergo stress to become the perfect and happy people they see. Depression, disorders, and changing behavior are effects from social media. Someone may see another pursuing the dreams they have but aren't accomplishing and feel insecure about themselves. Social media runs throughout the whole world and many have access to it no matter what age or gender. People everywhere go through these insecure feelings or seeing others having a more glamorous and sustaining life. Even though social media gives the opportunity to share many ideas and pictures with friends and family, other are watching and have a low self esteem from negative effects from social media.
Although social media provides communication with friends and helpful information, it can become addictive. For some they check social media a couple times a day, for others it can be a couple times an hour. There are people out there who are actually addicted to social media like Twitter or Facebook. Malkin, an instructor at Harvard Medical School, interviewed 16-year-old Chloe Miller, a sophomore at Newton South High School. She and her real-world friend Paige Herer told Malkin that they "log on to Facebook 10 to 20 times a day, sometimes between classes" (Shea n.p). Not only is social media addictive but also it is becoming a distraction to users. Users of social media constantly feel like they have to be connected to their friends and others they follow. Watching the lives of others and updating their own takes up valuable time in their lives for meaningless posts or pictures. Kimberly Young, who is clinical director of the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery, estimates that 5 to 10 percent of Americans--15 to 30 million people--suffer from Internet addiction (Parks n.p). Addiction to social media is a reality millions face and is a growing concern with the expansion of social media.
