Slavery and Political Compromises


            
             The Missouri Compromise was a compromise that made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. This shows signs of the Civil War because it was one of the first signs that slavery was causing a problem in the U.S. Underground Railroad (1849): The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes that would lead slaves from slavery in the South to freedom in the North through a series of different safe houses. This lead to the Civil War because it angered Southerners that Slaves were escaping to the North.
             Compromise of 1850.
             The Compromise of 1850 allowed California to become a free state and for there to be a stricter fugitive slave law there were other terms as well. This led to the Civil War because the Slave Law led to more Northerners becoming abolitionists and being against slavery.
             Fugitive Slave Act (1850).
             The Fugitive Slave Act was an act stating that all past slaves that escape to the North must be returned to their owner. It got stricter in the Compromise of 1850 which led to the Civil War because Northerners didn't want to find and send slaves back South so they became abolitionists, opposing slavery.
             Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852.
             Uncle Tom's Cabin is a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe that reveals the horrors of slavery. It leads to the Civil War because it opens many peoples' eyes about slavery and became a number one seller in the U.S., Britain, and France, causing an uproar in the abolitionist movement.
             Dred Scott Decision (1857).
             The Dred Scott Decision was a Supreme Court case in which it ruled that slaves are property and are still property even if they are living in free territory. Also, slaves don't have any civil rights. This led to the Civil War because the Northerners strongly disagreed with the result of the court case.
             Panic of 1857.
             The Panic of 1857 occurred mainly in Northern cities due to inflation in railroad stocks. This led to the Civil War because the South believed that the panic was mainly in the North because their economic system wasn't as strong as their own.
