They say that "GM crops are laboratory-made, using technology that is totally different from natural breeding methods, and pose different risks from non-GM crops; they can be toxic, allergenic or less nutritious and are not adequately regulated to ensure safety." (Antoniou, Robinson, and Fagan) However, these people just take it for granted that crops not made from natural methods are detrimental to humans, hence their conclusions are by no means impartial or science-based. Even though GM foods might do a little harm to consumers' health, the harm is so minimal that it can be totally ignored. Besides, the hard fact is that "foods derived from GM crops have been consumed by hundreds of millions of people across the world for more than 15 years, with no reported ill effects (or legal cases related to human health)." (Key, Ma, and Drake 292) In 2012, the American Association for the Advancement of Science declared that "foods containing ingredients from genetically modified (GM) crops pose no greater risk than the same foods made from crops modified by conventional plant breeding techniques." (AAAS 2012) What's more, a large amount of science-oriented publications including Nature and Scientific American have taken a hard look at the safety of GM technology and all came to the conclusion that there's no evidence showing GM foods are detrimental to human beings. Apart from this, crops with GM characteristics have been tested more than any other agricultural products in the history of agriculture with the results also showing no evidence of harm to human beings or animals. In addition, many a governmental regulatory agency, scientific institution as well as major health union in the whole world have achieved consensus on the security of GM foods. We should always keep it in mind that it is statistics and science that we rational people should have faith in instead of some unfounded rumours.
