How would you feel not being able to say what is on your mind or not being able to have any close friends or to be love? These are the challenges that Winston faces in George Orwell's classic novel, "Animal Farm." Orwell's remarkable international reputation is due to his two novels Animal Farm and 1984. The war influenced him in another significant way, while developed a growing antipathy towards politics, his militant anti war stance of 1938-1939 yield mow to an equally militant patriotism. The outbreak of world war 2 in 1939 intensified George's feeling of anxiety and pessimism. Nineteen Eighty-Four takes place in a strange London one that we are not use to, and the text says Winston estimates it is the year 1984. However, since History books have been altered so much and daily news is constantly changing, it remains an estimation and nobody can be absolutely certain of the year anymore. "April 4th, 1984. He sat back. A sense of complete helplessness had descended upon him. To begin with he did not know with any certainty that this was 1984. It must be round about that date, since he was fairly sure that his age was thirty-nine, and he believed that he had been born in 1944 or 1945; but it was never possible nowadays to pin down any date within a year or two. " (Orwell, 7).
By combining motifs, imagery and characters George Orwell writes the totalitarianism novel Nineteen Eighty-Four to expose the consequences of the government having all the power to draw attention to the fact that people can be broken down. Firstly, Orwell's odd choice of characters allows him to criticize the fact that Big Brother the leader of London and the government have all the power and controls everything proving that human can be broken down to the point where they just do whatever you tell them to do. Human can be broken down to the point where they say that two plus two is five and truly believe it, Winston and his love affair Julia show that after they come out out room 101 where they were just tortured they do not talk to each other or anyone for that matter they just sit in a cafe and listen to the news because they don't want to break the law.
