Domestic Violence and Women's Rights

Domestic violence is a global problem that affects men, women and children and is the aggressive or controlling behavior of an individual often involving a spouse or partner. There are many organizations that have been created to help protect and care for people that experience domestic violence as it is a very serious on-going problem. The organization standing together aims to eradicate domestic abuse by transforming the way organizations and individuals think about, prevent and respond to it. As an organization it was founded thirteen years ago, its aim to work as a community and to work with other organizations to help and care for those who are suffering. It recognizes that domestic violence is a huge problem that cannot be tackled by one organization, but together with the support of others it can help tackle the problem and help make a significant difference. (Standing together 2011) .
Standing together sets out to bring the issue of domestic violence to peoples attention and change the way people approach the issue. Research studies have shown that 2012/13, 7% of women and 4% of men were estimated to have experienced domestic abuse, equivalent to around 1.2 million female and 700,000 male victims. (House of commons 2014).
Standing together conducts research that indicates domestic violence affects one in four women, and one in six men in their lifetime; regardless of age, social class, race, disability or lifestyle. There are often many reasons why people will suffer in silence. Perhaps the fear of more abusive punishments, the fear of not having control and possibly having nowhere to go other than their abusive home, this is why the promotion of organizations like standing together should be encouraged, to help not just women but all victims to come forward and lean on these organizations for help and support. (Standing together 2011).
Often women are encouraged to speak out about any problems within their home lives or abusive behavior they are subjected too.
