Contributing Factors of Teen Stress

Adolescence is the transitional period between puberty and adulthood. Teenagers experience many changes and challenges that can make adolescence a stressful time. One of the main challenges teens experience is the place they must go to five days a week: school. With school comes an overwhelming amount of work, frustration and stress. Stress is a major topic of adolescent development because teens can easily become stressed due to how much homework they have each night, activities outside of school, grades etc. In the Washington Post news article Stressed-out teens, with school a main cause it states "U.S teenagers report feeling more stressed-out than adults do, with school being a main cause ". The article tells readers about the impact of school on students and also conducts a survey that found 83 percent of teens said that school was a somewhat or substantial source of stress. The survey reveals the unhealthy levels of stress experienced by American teens caused by school.
The questions on my survey were chosen because they were topics I felt were important factors to teen stress. For example, how much time one spends socializing vs. doing homework and whether or not one participates in activities outside of school would most likely reflect on your GPA and stress level. I also included the subject of cheating because of stress or lack of time in my survey to determine the lengths students would go to for a good grade. After I completed my survey I established how to conduct it. Majority of the surveys were given to two elective classes, Foundations of Technology and Justice Law Society, because electives are a mix of each grade and not given to students based on merit. Some of the surveys were also given during lunch to students in the library studying or reading a book and to those in the cafeteria socializing with friends. In total, I gave out fifty-two surveys: eleven freshmen, eighteen sophomores, thirteen juniors and ten seniors.
