The Short Stories of Jhumpa Lahiri

Her father had collections of short stories and novels throughout the whole house. Her mother always read books from Bengal, India where they were from. Jhumpa wasn't able to read the language but her mother use to always talk about the books to her. Her India background is one of the most important things to Jhumpa. She felt that her family roots and values were very important with being an Indian-American in the United States. She took great interest in learning places and things from India and adapted the same values and traditions that her parents used. .
Jhumpa's first short story collection she put out was Interpreter of Maladies. It was not a huge selling piece at first. She had trouble getting people attention since nobody really knew about her or her work at the time. But this was only for a short period of time. From the very first short story called A Temporary Matter, she shows how her backgrounds influence her writings. A Temporary Matter deals with an India couple named Shoba and Shukuma who find themselves dealing with problems in their relationship since their unborn child passed away during labor. They get a notice that the power in their home will be turning off for five days. Regularly when they both come home there isn't much affection. They barely speak and basically avoid each other when they have family time. Each night they would sit together in the dark telling each other secrets about their past. The secrets got deeper and deeper each night. The husband states that he knew the baby gender and held it when the baby was dead and she fell asleep. At the time she did not want either of them to know and he kept that a secret from her for 6 months .She also tells him that she has signed a lease on an apartment and is going to live by herself. .
In this short she shows two popular traditions that she learned and adapted to from her Indian background. First is the concept of marriage.
