The Designated Hitter


            1) The purpose of this essay was to hopefully show that the designated hitter rule in baseball is really unneeded in today's game. I tried to show that baseball players should be complete players and be able to accomplish all the skills for the sport. After reading this essay I hope fans and non- fans will see that the rule should not be used in this age of baseball.
             2) I had actually never read the official rule as listed by Major League Baseball on the designated hitter. I also learned the real reason it was implemented, which had to do more with money than playing baseball. I did not change my perspective; I still believe there should be no designated hitter.
             3) For this essay it was a little difficult to find a lot of credible sources. There were a lot of opinion pieces on this long standing debate. .
             4) I truly enjoy anything sports related. I really enjoyed the research part of this essay, as it was on a sport I enjoy. The writing process was also enjoyable as it was on a subject that really interests me. .
             5) I chose this topic as anything sports related really keeps my interest. I find it much easier to write on subjects that I am passionate about. This topic also relates to my field of study in sports management.

             Since the rule change that introduced the designated hitter rule to baseball, it has been a much debated subject in baseball for over 30 years. The designated hitter is only primarily used in the American league and certain games like the World Series and All-Star game. It is the only rule that does not encompass all of major league baseball. Many believe that in this age of baseball, the designated hitter is an unneeded rule in today's game.
             Opening day of the 1973 baseball season saw the New York Yankees Ron Blomberg step up to the plate as the first player in Major League Baseball to be a designated hitter. The benefits of the creation of this rule were to increase scores and attendance as stated by Dustin Buehler and Steve Calandrillo in their essay "Baseball's Moral Hazard: Law, Economics, and The Designated Hitter Rule" (2084).
