The task role gets the job done, and the social/emotional roles assist the group. To be effective in a group or groupthink each member in a group may have to take on many roles. .
The group task roles include: Initiating, elaborating, coordinating, summarizing, recording and evaluating. The Initiating task roles are the ideas, goals, plans, actions and the defining position of the group. Elaborating task role clarifies the idea as well as provides examples and explanations. Coordinating organizes, promotes, and develops team work and cooperation. Summarizing pulls the ideas together by orienting, reviewing and reminding the group about what was discussed. Recording keeps a record, prepares reports and keeps track of the groups work and the evaluating role critiques the ideas and suggestions. .
Harris and Sherblom (2005) (p 53) stated that sometimes roles conflict, collide, or may be confused by ambiguous or incompatible sets of expectations. The advantage of working within a group decision making process is the social interaction that can bring more input and solutions; however because of the different diversity within a group disagreement/arguments can also arise. "When we put people with very different life experiences and sets of assumptions together in a group or team and ask them to work together toward a common goal, difficulties often arise). .
There are different phases of group development that are known as: forming, storming, norming and performing. .
Forming stage is the orientation phase, storming is the phase when the group has become familiar with one another and tends to be more open and honest about their opinions, norming is the willingness of the group to settle upon specific rules for discussion and how rules will be made and performing identifies the real work phase for the group. In order for a group to be successful, the group needs to be aware of what is expected.
