Napa Valley is a wine country and it is estimated that they suffered at least 80 million on property damaged and loss of wines. .
COMMUNICATION.
Communication is very vital when dealing with any disaster. The textbook Emergency Management has the following quote: "Communicating with residents is one of the most important tasks that elected officials perform in the wake of a disaster. The public needs concise, accurate, timely information to know what to do, and to be reassured that local government is responding appropriately (Emergency Management, p.139)." This is so true, and if there is no communication then it will cause more panic. With social media on the rise, it is a good way to utilize communication. The communication was lacking after the earthquake. Many of the business did not know what to do or there was no instructions. A gentleman who was staying at the Marriott, was part of this earthquake and once it was over, he had no idea what to do. He said that a siren did go off, but no other message followed. Once, he got to the lobby the attendant didn't know what to do either because she was new to the area and had no instructions on what to do. .
MITIGATION.
Mitigation is the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something. With California, being a state that is prone to earthquakes, it is vital that houses and buildings are built to withstand an earthquake. However, there was a primary tectonic surface rupture beneath residential structures (AGU Blogosphere). That caused a lot of damages to many residential houses and streets. Many have question why are there houses and communities built on a fault. Well the answer is simple, "In the north the answer is simple: the fault was simply not mapped. Nobody had identified it topographically, and researchers had not yet been granted the funds/time to go investigate and try to find it (AGU Blogosphere).
