The Ford-Firestone Brawl

" .
Rather than using costly improvements to fix these issues, Ford opted to soften the suspension of the vehicle and lower the recommended tire pressure from the prescribed 30 – 35pounds per square inch (psi) to 26 psi. In 1989, when these Firestone tires underwent testing at 29 psi, the results showed "a severe tread package separation from the tire carcass", lower fuel efficiency, and heat build-up in the tires (Boatright, 2012). After this testing, Ford asked Firestone to reduce the weight of their tires by 3 percent so Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards could be met. Despite these issues, the Ford Explorer hit the market in March of 1990. Soon after its release, reports of tire failure and rollovers were received by both Firestone and Ford. .
The first complaints of tire failure came from the Middle East and Venezuela, where rugged road conditions were the norm. In Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf countries, drivers "often lowered tire pressure on sand and neglected to add air for highway driving" (Boatright, 2012). Although additional reports of tire failure came from several warm-weather US states, Ford replaced the factory installed Firestone tires on vehicles outside of the US, but failed to issue a recall or report it to the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA).
             1. How might Firestone have learned from the Ford/Goodyear schism of four years previously?.
Tire tread separation problems, comparable to those experienced by Firestone, "have contributed to eight deaths linked to light-truck tires manufactured by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company" (CBS, 2000). Although Goodyear spokesman Chuck Sinclair stated "We believe the Load Range E tires to be good tires, free of any manufacturing or design defects", Goodyear found that "a new trend of larger vehicles might lead to overloading of tires" (CBS, 2000).
