Throughout history, gender inequality continues to be an issue that is not always on everybody's mind. Gender inequality is the unequal treatment or views of people based on weather they are male or female. It occurs from differences in socially built gender roles and also biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences. Women have historically been viewed as inferior to men in many aspects such as in the workplace, education and religion. Since the late 19th century when the first movements against inequality took place, advocacy groups have campaigned for equality between men and women. For example there is a campaign called HeForShe, which is a campaign that aims to engage men and boys as mediators of change for the goal of gender equality and women's rights. They do this by encouraging them to stand up against inequalities faced by women and girls. .
HeForShe is lead by the Harry Potter actress, Emma Watson, who is also a U.N. Women Global Goodwill Ambassador states, "the point of the campaign is to make people see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals." Watson added, "We should stop defining each other by what we are not and start defining ourselves by who we are. We can all be freer, and this is what HeForShe is about." Although this campaign was a success, it is not enough to make a complete world change, there needs to be a lot more awareness to the problem. However, it is evident that not enough is being done to put an end to gender inequality because we live in a male dominated world, women have access to less opportunities than men, and have traditionally had kept few authoritative roles in the catholic churches. .
First of all, gender inequality is an ongoing issue because not enough awareness is being spread on the subject. This is because we are and have been in a male dominated world for an extremely long period of time.
