For offender the transition from prison to the community is one of the hardest transitions. They need structure to help them with a smooth transition. Offenders need a balance between freedom and strict rules. This process can be a hard one. Some offenders, actually many offenders do not know how to handle the reentry process. They have to learn the basic skill of life all over again, which can be extremely frustrating. That alone is not an easy process. .
As a community we need to create a program to help these offenders smoothly reenter our community. We expect for the offenders to get out and fall right into place and live at a low recidivism rate. However, that is an unfair expectation. This is especially unfair for offenders who have been locked away for a long period of time. Offenders have been locked away and may have forgotten the basic skills for life. So how can the transition from prison to the community are designed so as to minimize the risk of recidivism. There are many barriers that are present in the community that directly lead to recidivism. The lack of care is one example. Many people in the community simple do not care about the offenders. They do not care what happens to them once they are released. Many label them and judge them from their past. The lack of concern is also a huge barrier. Once they are released, people in the community are not concerned about helping them fall back into place. They could care less about if the offender has gone to rehab, or something of that sort. They simply do not concern themselves. Also the lack of resources is a barrier that is present in the community. Offenders only report to their probation officer because they have to. Offenders are only placed in halfway houses because they are told to. What about the offender who was told to do those things but need help adjusting to reentering the community. They have no idea where to go or what to do.
