Draupadi - A Woman of Virtue

When speaking of virtue in relation to characters, one common thing comes to mind; men. The epic The Mahabharata, retold by R. K. Narayan, majorly plays into the idea of the virtuous male. First, in order to realize the virtues of the novel's characters, a working definition of the word "virtuous " is required so that all characters are fairly judged. For this analysis, five distinct characteristics are used to define a virtuous person; they know what they are doing, they choose to act for themselves, they act through an expression of mature and stable character, they follow role-specific duties, and they follow the traditions of the culture they reside in. With this definition, the men of the epic are judged accordingly and determined if they are virtuous or not. However, women are often overlooked when it comes to their virtuous character, despite their tendency to be more virtuous than their male counterparts. Through the analysis of Draupadi, the wife of the five brothers, she fits well to the definition of "virtuous " and its five defining characteristics, arguably better than any man in the epic. .
"They know what they are doing; " this is the most difficult of the five characteristics to prove. In this case, forethought will be used in this characteristic. For example, anyone can have an understanding of their present actions; however, a virtuous person understands their present actions as well as the future consequences they must deal with, whether positive or negative. Draupadi's demonstrates this ability during the conflict with Kichaka, Queen Virata's brother. After he makes an attempt to assault her, she goes to Bhima to recruit him in the murder of Kichaka. During the planning stages, she understands the consequences of her actions, as "they evolved a plan " and "she was to lure [him] to visit a dance hall, promising to yield him there " (113). Also, after the mourning for the general, the small uprising against Draupadi thought about and prepared for before the murder, as "Bhima rescued her at the last minute " (113).
