The mean score of the First Impression Scale (FIS) was then accumulated, calculated and recorded. A graph and table was then constructed based on the information collected. It was hypothesised that students tend to form a stronger first impression and a higher First Impression Scale (FIS) score would be generated if they are exposed to a visual stimulus.
Results.
Type of Stimulus Shown.
60 seconds visual footage .
60 seconds audio footage .
Mean of First Impression Scale (FIS) score.
735.04.
707.88.
Interpretation .
I hypothesise that visual stimulus compared to audio stimulus, may form a stronger first impression. Based on the results accumulated, my hypothesis is accepted. The mean of the First Impression Scale (FIS) score for each type of stimulus was calculated and presented in the table and graph above. Mean was used to measure the central tendency of a distribution of First Impression Scale (FIS) score describing the different footages. It is shown clearly in Graph 1 that the students who were exposed to the visual footage scored a higher First Impression Scale (FIS) score. This explains how a person's personality is communicated through their character. A person's image portraits them in different ways. As a result, to secure a positive first impression, a person should take in consideration of their appearance and present themselves confidently. .
Evaluation .
The strength of this investigation includes how the participants were randomly allocated. Each student were asked to draw lots which contains group numbers they were to be assigned to. This is to avoid the use of authority throughout the research. By using random allocation method in this research, it benefits in such a way that the experiment is carried out equally. By randomly allocating the participants, the researcher is able to obtain a more valid results. This supports the researcher with more confidence that the impression formed towards the male presenter by the participants is due to the different stimulus being exposed to and is less likely to be affected by the characteristic of the group.
