Turning the Wheels of the World

" (Gallagher, 2011) Along with balancing a career and a family most engineers still give back to the world in one way or another. Brandon Gunn, student at the University of Dayton, took the trip of a lifetime to help poverty stricken countries gain the basic needs of life. He spent six weeks in Panama helping out many people, for a project called ETHOS. ETHOS (Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities of Service Learning) is a program that lets college engineering students put the knowledge they learn in the classroom into a real life service opportunity. This program itself is life changing for many people who attend it including Brandon who said "it was awe inspiring to see how people lived life without many things that I take for granted every day"" (Gunn, 2012). Life as a mechanical engineer is very challenging because time is divided by career, family and can also be invested into helping the world through many different projects and organizations like ETHOS. .
The brief history of mechanical engineering originally starts out with the ancient empires of the Romans and Chinese. According to how stuff works, the ancient Romans influenced modern civilization with its developments of "sewers, aqueducts and concrete"" (Gallagher, 2011). The Romans mechanically designed and constructed each of these in order to fulfill a specific purpose in their society. The also Chinese made major advancements with the " first fully functional mechanical clock and creating cast iron weapons" "(Thinkquest, 2011). This benefited the Chinese because they could fight in combat more proficiently and keep track of time, which back then was considered bizarre. Both of these great empires had a distinctive impact on engineering that still influences society today. Some mechanical engineers that are a bit more modern are Robert Fulton and Cyrus McCormick who each engineered a product that revolutionized the United States.
