How would you feel if you were denied the opportunity of marrying the man/woman that you love? History shows the discrimination of African-Americans and how our country has evolved regarding racism, but now there is a form of discrimination that is becoming more apparent. This form is towards those of other sexual orientations, such as gays, lesbians, or bisexuals. Legalizing gay marriage would help decrease the divorce rate in the United States, which is a substantial issue due to the fact that our country has the highest divorce rate in the world; also, separation of church and state. One of the major reasons that gay marriage is illegal is because of the religious interpretation that "homosexuals are sinners. " Such a religious perspective should have no place in legal matters in our country. By allowing gay marriage homosexuals would develop more rights, therefore decreasing the youth suicide rate. .
It has been proven that an average of 50% of married couples get divorced in the U.S., meaning half of our entire country goes through divorce. We have, by far, the highest divorce rate in the entire world. Many anti-gay conservatives argue, that people should, "respect the sanctity of marriage, " but is this really the right way of doing so? Allowing gays/lesbians the right to wed, will increase marriage rates because less couples would be getting divorced due to incompatibility or infertility. .
One of the major reasons that gay marriage is illegal is because of the religious interpretation that "homosexuals are sinners. " Such a religious perspective should have no influence in legal matters in our country. The Ten Commandments don't define our legal system, so why does the religious argument of, "Marriage is the union between a man and a woman " keep so many happy couples from legally getting married? Legalizing gay marriage will have no impact on religion or the religious views of others, just as religion should have no impact on the issue of gay marriage.
