Saving the Environment - Learning from Dr. Seuss

Previous assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have shown multiple lines of evidence that climate warming is happening across our planet, largely as a result of human activities (IPCC, 2013). Compelling evidence of climate warming derives from observations of long-term temperature changes in the atmosphere, land, and oceans. Strong evidence shows increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. The Global Mean Surface Temperature has increased since the late 19th century with each of the past three decades being successively warmer. The globally averaged combined land and ocean surface temperature data as calculated by a linear trend, show a warming of .85°C, over the period 1880-2012. The IPCC has calculated that the Global Mean Surface Temperature will increase between 2°C and 6°C by the end of the 21st century. Forests play an important role in regulating the earth's temperature and weather patterns by storing large quantities of carbon and water. This regulatory function has a profound effect on both the local and the global climate. Forest trees have the ability to slow the rate of climate warming by absorbing the heat and carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere (Jackson, 2008). The living tissue of a tree is a storage sink for carbon, which would otherwise contribute to the greenhouse effect and global climate change. Forest trees are the solution to climate warming. A greater number of trees on our planet will lower or stop the rate of climate warming (WWF, 2014).
Close to our college town of Madison, Wisconsin lives the boreal forest, the largest forest in North America. The boreal forest is the world's largest terrestrial biome, making up 14% of the world's forest area, and consists of aspen, pine, spruce, and larch trees. It is located mostly in Canada but also extends into Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York.
