"A Negro Nation Within a Nation" was originally a speech that W. Du Bois gave as he resigned from the NAACP in June of 1935. This however is a primary source because he gave this speech in the midst of the conflict. During this time period, there had been a recent stock market crash in the United States. It did not solely take credit for the Great Depression but it played it's part. Buying consumer goods on credit became very popular. At some point people could no longer buy anything because all of their finances were going toward the paying off of their credit that they owed. Private banks used people's money to gamble with stocks. During this time there was no law or regulation prohibiting banks to use their customers money. With everybody buying goods, and no distribution of wealth among the rich, middle class, and the poor inflation started. People who had then bought homes, were now owning property that they owed more on that what it was worth. So now we come back to 1935 when Du Bois made "A Negro Nation Within a Nation" and we look at his motive and reasoning. Du Bois once was a firm believer in total race integration, but since he saw that it would take too much time, he believe African Americans should organize as their own section and community in order to reach economic and cultural salvation. Du Bois does not specifically speak about any historical events cause it is clear to the people what is going on because they are so drastically affected. .
W. E. B. Du Bois was a man of many hats but was most influential in the civil rights movement and in his poetry. Du Bois was one of the main voices for the African American people. He was apart of the NAACP, paving the way for African Americans today. He was their leading protest figure and voice. He was the first African American to graduate from Harvard to earn a doctorate degree. .
