The Drowned Men of Literature

It is obviously that in "The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World" the drowned man transforms the minds of the villagers and the whole image of the village. He takes the villagers to a beautiful that they have never imagined before. However, in "The Drowned Giant", the giant first impresses the villagers but then he is dismembered to decorate the village without making the poor village more beautiful, which shows the confrontation of the villagers to the giant. Therefore, it shows a disagreement between the changes from ordinary to extraordinary in the stories respectively. .
The two "drowned men" both have special appearances, but they are treated differently. In the stories, the two drowned men are strange-looking creatures to the people and they attracted different kinds of people to take a look on them. In Marque's story, the drowned man washes ashore is found on the beach next to a poor, small village, which the villagers there have no knowledge, narrow horizons and they have never seen such a beautiful man before. The villagers even give him a name and treated him as God. The drowned man is then accepted and loved by the people with respect. Moreover, in the last paragraph of the story, which I consider it as the climax of the story, the villagers give him a funeral to show their respect as they realize they cannot be the same as the drowned man(Shmoop, 2013). However, the drowned giant in Ballard's story is not that lucky. Although the village in this story is also in a small size, it is the fact that the villagers there are not as less-developed as the villagers in Marquez's story. In Ballard's story, some new kinds of people turn up, especially the scientific experts and policemen. They both give suspicious sights on the drowned man and examine the body of the drowned giant, without respect. Besides, some youths, "had now scaled the ear and were pulling themselves into right orbit, whose blue globe, completely occluded by some milk-coloured fluid gazed sightlessly pass their miniature forms", this shows that the drowned giant is amputated by the villagers.
