A Small Good Thing

If that isn't bad enough he presents himself as not a caring doctor. For example "Dr. Francis is coming again at eight o"clock this morning. He's going to have something to tell us then, something more definite" (pg.124). Dr. Francis did a poor job of reassuring them he knew what he was doing. In such a rough time it's strange the baker's persistence sticks out so much. At the hardest time in their lives, they are dealing with so much. And they have to deal with the harassing calls. Little do the parent's know the baker has much more to offer then they can ever imagine.
The parent's having to deal with a sick child. He was not supposed to die. It didn't seem like he was going to die. It was unexpected. The parent's knew he was sick, and were unsure of what exactly was happening with him. It was obvious the last thing they thought would happen was him dying. It's rare. The story never makes you feel like it's even a possibility. The story gives off more uncertainty about his health. No real answers. Hopeless best describes what's going on for the parent's and the baker.
The baker has no idea what is going on. And at one point before bringing them comfort and nourishment, he brought the opposite. He brought them more anguish. His presence is a reminder of what was suppose to take place, but never happened. Scotty was supposed to celebrate a birthday with a cake. Instead of celebrating a birthday they were in a hospital fighting for their son's life. His persistence was a constant reminder. It made anger come out in the parent's. The baker in some sort of way served as the punching bag, where they would take out all their frustration. For example the father knows no better and blows up as we read "Howard hung up the phone" (pg.116). Instead of explaining to him after hearing his situation he didn't care and hung up. The right thing to do was explain and not leave him without understanding.
