ROTC Scholarship Essay

While attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards camp I learned how to actively lead a group while continuing to be a member of the same team. I know now that being a leader does not mean you are exempt from a team you are instead a part of a whole unit. Time management plays a critical role here as I have discovered. It is a delicate balance between nurturing my teammates' talents and honing my own. Leadership positions in my mind are earned and not just given away arbitrarily. Therefore everyday I must not only prove to others but myself as well that I deserve the position, which is a quality I believe will be beneficial in the Army. .
I do not believe that every accomplishment must be recognized and praised for me to gain the satisfaction of a job well done. As I have been taught in sports success stems from what you do when nobody else is watching you. In a sense when I have a goal in mind to which I am truly devoted there is not much that can shake my focus. Far too often I have witnessed other people tripping over their own egos which is the reason why I do not seek glory. In groups I am the first one to volunteer for the most difficult part of a project. I could never let the burden fall on the shoulders of someone who is either unwilling or unready. This hardworking and dependable nature is something that I feel will be incredibly useful as a cadet and eventually as an officer. "Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless,  and add what is uniquely your own.".
                                                      ~Bruce Lee.
As a girl in high school I have encountered many rough patches where others often left me feeling disrespected and worthless. With this experience in mind I was afforded the insight and skills to in return treat others with unconditional positive respect. I understand that I am only one person, and that changing how people interact with each other on a daily basis is a monumental task.
