Women and Drug Abuse


Girls and young women are likelier than boys and young men to abuse substances in order to lose weight, relieve stress or boredom, improve their mood, reduce sexual inhibitions, self-medicate depression, and increase confidence.Although men are more likely to become addicts, woman generally have a care provider who prescribe drugs which jump starts the addiction. Health care providers prescribe antidepressants, narcotics, and anti-anxiety drugs to woman more than men and these drugs are extremely addictive. All of these drugs have a big chance of being abused, for years these pills are refilled unnecessarily and the abuse drags on. Being they are prescribed by a doctor women become oblivious to the fact the pills are addictive and they are suffering from the effects of addiction. .
             When prescription drugs are used to treat medical conditions for which they were approved at the recommended dosage, these drugs are safe and effective. Rarely leading to addiction or abuse. When not used properly, they can lead to addiction and death, especially when used in combination with alcohol or other drugs. According to [healthywoman.org] women are more likely to use narcotic pain relievers for reasons that are not medial and they are more likely to mix prescription drugs with alcohol.
             Many women suffer from anxiety and depression which are just some of the many reasons they turn to drugs, problems in their household or at work become very over whelming. Women are the rock, the ones who keeps it together but most times they feel as though no one can help with their problems because they're too busy attending to everyone else's issues. This is a big reason why they turn to drugs to help cope. Having much pride, the denial of the addiction becomes bigger because they feel shameful of themselves, beginning to use the drugs longer and in greater amounts than intended. In most cases, developing a physical dependence on a certain drug causes your body to build up a tolerance which requires more of the drug to have the same effect.
