Middle March Essay

"Don't let your pride get in the way of your relationships.
George Eliot's extensive saga, "Middlemarch," is about married couple, Rosamond and Lydgate. At the outset of the story, the young lovers are in the midst of an unplanned financial crisis, leading them to increasing levels of stress and a numerous arguments. Elliot manages to portray both sides of the couple using narrative perspective such as third person omniscient which informs the reader of what a spoiled yet regretful and sensitive person Rosamond is, while also describing Lydgate as a hardworking man who is too proud to search for help when he needs it. Through the use of dialogue, the reader can understand how slowly throughout the passage, Rosamond and Lydagate's marriage is falling apart due to their contrasting issues. .
Rosamond's sensitive and spoiled personality is shown through dialogue in the beginning of the passage when she asks her husband if he has "not asked Papa for money " which demonstrates how she tries to find the easy way out of things while also proving what a spoiled woman she is for asking her father for money, although she is an independent adult herself. As the dialogue continues, it is shown that Lydgate is too proud to ask anyone for help when he responds to Rosamond that he would rather not let her father know about their own financial issues "unless [he] chose to tell him. " Rosamond continues to insist by saying "Why can you not put off having the inventory made? You can send the men away tomorrow when they come. " Into which Lydgate responds, "I shall not send them away. " This demonstrates the fact that Lydagate is a man of his word and will do what he can in order to solve his issues, unlike Rosamond. The dialogue allows the reader to understand how different the ideals of solving a problem are to the couple. While Rosamond tries to find the easy way out of their financial crisis, Lydgate chooses to find a reasonable and fair solution, for he is too proud to ask for help from anyone, including Rosamond's father.
