The Effects of the Mongol Rule in Russia

A type of veche is in fact still used today in some modern cities across Russia. Another effect the Mongols had on Kievan Russian politics was the use of a civilian governor. Although these darugi, as they were called, were not present in every city or territory, territories that had given up to the Mongols without fight or showed no more signs of rebellion felt the more lenient rule of the darugi. In a not so progressive fashion, other areas of Russia were ruled by a more militaristic type of governor. However these governors, or basqaqi, were only put in place where there was still unrest and the citizens of that area were not completely accepting Mongolian rule. .
Perhaps one of the largest and longest lasting effect of the Mongols on Russian politics was an indirect effect. While ruling their territories from the Mongol's eastern capital, darugi had to implement a procedure so they could adequately tax a territory based on their population. Thus came the use of a census. This genius way of noting population used 10 as a root for counting population. After a somewhat calm period, the darugi began to shift the responsibility of collecting taxes to the princes of each area. When the prince of Kiev turned on the Mongols, the prince of Moscow stayed loyal and was thus given the responsibility of chief tax collector. This turned Moscow into the economic capital of Russia and eventually served as the hub of the Russian revolution against the Mongols. To this day Moscow is still the capital of Russia, all because of the use of the Mongolian census and taxing responsibilities.
Largely tied in with the politics of Russia, the Mongols also had great indirect effects on the Russian Orthodox Church as well. During the initial Mongolian raid, most churches were robbed and burned down. Mongols also spread terror by killing countless members of the church and priests themselves. The ones whose lives were spared were usually thrown and forced into slavery.
