Observation - Early Childhood

They change proportions and they begin to look more like an adult rather than babies, a child in the beginning stages of early childhood has a protruding belly, round face, short limbs and a large head. (Berger, 2011) Their arms and legs start to stretch and catch up to their head and trunk taking on a more balanced look. A child will begin to lose their baby fat as they develop leaner bodies with stronger muscles that are necessary for physical playing.
"J " is very lean, his "baby fat " has turned into muscle, he has become taller and his center of gravity has shifted to his belly from his chest. His whole structure has become more proportioned; he looks more like a little adult than a toddler. He is average for his weight, weighing 40lbs; he is a bit on the shorter side than his peers. This also may have to do with his parents being on the shorter side themselves, his mother is 5 foot and father is 5 foot 9 inches. "J " has begun fine tuning his gross and fine motor skills. "J " has an active lifestyle, he loves to play outside with the dog, throwing balls, climbing trees and playing with other kids around his own age. He tries very hard to pump on his own while on a swing, he hasn't quite mastered that yet. Pouring milk from the jug to a glass has become easier for him to do without spilling but, it does depend on how full the jug is. Talking to his mother she said that he is able to accomplish more tasks involving both hands, like cutting food with a knife and fork, zipping a zipper without help though it does depend on the size of the zipper. He keeps up with all of the kids in his Sunday school class that are the same age, surpassing most in his class verbally. He is a very articulate 4 year-old, he pronounces most hard words correctly and puts together long sentences that are at higher age level then his age. .
"Thank you ma'am, for letting me come over and play with your dog.
