Summary of Underage Drinking


            The minimum legal drinking age in the U. should be lowered to eighteen years old. The definition of 'adult' is simply a number. In the United States, the age one becomes an adult is eighteen years old. At 18, you can sign up for the armed forces, tattoo your own body, buy a firearm, and purchase prescription narcotics. So why not a natural drink in moderation? .
             An argument might be that 'kids,' or those under 18 are not responsible enough to drink in moderation. This may be so, but why then, can you drive a car at sixteen? An even more dangerous practice than consuming alcohol? .
             When the 18th amendment was repealed by the 21st in 1933, the 'drinking age,' was not an issue of importance. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 set a more intense regulation on the purchase and consumption of alcohol, where the majority of states kept the age at 21, to satisfy the federal government's previous number. Before 1978, the legal drinking age in Michigan was eighteen, yet as of December 1, 1978, it was raised to twenty-one years of age. More than 77% of Americans oppose the idea of the drinking age being lowered, 22% support the thought, and only 1% have no opinion.              Drinking wouldn't be as cool if it was allowed. Teenagers are engineered to rebel. When something is forbidden or not allowed by society or law, the majority of young people want to do just that. If the drinking age was lowered to an age where seniors can have a Corona at their graduation party or before they go off for boot camp (which they are allowed to do at the ripe age of eighteen,). The more something is prohibited, the more teenagers make is popular or cool to do. The idea of teenagers' 'risk taking' behavior need is based on the psychiatric definition of brain development.
