Billy Elliot - The Musical

During this performance, I was able to observe the originality that Daldry had created to show the emotion of solidarity through each of the characters whilst using juxtaposition.
To show Billy's determination to succeed, Daldry uses a variety of techniques to emphasise his strengths and the frustration he feels when people try to stop him from making his transition. Billy's determination is one of the key elements involved in his eventual transition into a different world. Daldry also uses a lot of reverse stereotyping for example; Billy is thought to come across gay because he has a passion for ballet however he is not, on the other hand his best friend Michael is gay but doesn't do ballet, so Daldry uses this effect to create misunderstanding of the characters, making the audience feel surprised and astounded at this concept that Daldry is putting across.
One of the greatest modern musicals, the scenic design by Ian MacNeil is a major triumph, enhanced by the poetic automation of the main elements (bed and table lift) The props and scenery are another stunning feature in act 1 as Ian Mac Neil uses the bed and table lifts to show more levels within the performance giving it a more visual interest. Giving the performance more levels it can help to show the emotion in a different aspect for example during the angry dance Billy goes underground; this shows that he is trapped because of society and is trying to push against it and try to get through to what he wishes to do in his life. Decorative backgrounds vividly depicted the settings. Not only does the scenery show the audience where and when the play takes place, it helps establish the atmosphere the director intended.
Billy Elliot opens with the projection of black and white documentary/newsreel footage onto a large screen which is suspended within the arch of the stage. The film is genuine footage of the miners' strike and shows both police and workforce in situations of protest, conflict and division.
