Globalization of Sports

Globalization is a word you hear and you start to think about the economy and politics and things of that nature. When you pair it with sports such as soccer, basketball, and baseball you think about how those too mix. With sports all we see are all our favorite players and how good they look playing the game that they love so much. We never think about how or where they came from. We never think about what goes on behind the sense of the MBL or the NBA. Since there are a wide range of sports to focus on we are going to focus specifically on the National Basketball Association (NBA). Globalization runs through the world of sports in several directions. What I mean by that is instead of the glitter and gold you see on TV, there are more to it. There are International scouting and recruitment of talent, Distribution of games through broadcasting and web, Sales of players' jerseys and other merchandise around the world, and cross-border investing in team ownership. In the NBA it's a pretty big association and they need to keep the NBA fresh with new players and faces. There for coaches have to scout and recruit players for talent. .
In the Article "Globalization and Sports: An Overview part 1" it talks about how players from a different country wasn't capable of playing in America because some people argued that they wouldn't understand English, would become homesick, wasn't coachable, and couldn't play defense. We all know defense wins games! For the San Antonio Spurs, they had a diverse team to start with. They had Tony Parker of France and Manu Ginóbili of Argentina. The coach became a little curious and open minded about recruiting other players from different countries. Plus Gregg Popovich (head coach for the spurs since 1988) didn't believe what people were trying to argue. Matter of fact he strongly disagreed with it and tried to persuaded the Spurs to recruit European players.
