The USPS is an organization that has been around longer than anyone that is currently living in the United States. More than two centuries ago the Postal Service started. Now there are some people who think that the USPS needs to be changed or else do away with it completely. I am the kind of person who doesn't like change, but the USPS needs to change. .
Many ideas have been presented to make the Postal Service more efficient. Cutting Saturday delivery is a decent idea, and would save $40 billion over the next ten years (Source F); however, this would increase the workload that mail carriers would have on Mondays. I think that a good idea is to require postal workers that drive vehicles to drive eco-friendly cars. The Jeeps that most workers drive get around eleven miles to the gallon. My grandfather is a postal worker, and his truck gets fourteen miles to the gallon. Getting the postal workers to drive vehicles that can get twenty-eight or higher mpg would save hundreds of thousands gallons of gas every year. With all the gallons of gas saved the dependency on foreign oil would be lessened. .
The USPS's job is not as easy as it once was. From 2000 to 2009 mail volume went down 177 billion pieces while destination points increased by fifteen million (Source B). My grandfather, whom is a rural carrier, ends up driving over 100 miles by the time his route is over. To counteract how much mail carriers are driving to deliver less mail, mail volume has to step up. To do this the USPS needs to advertise like a business. It is cheaper to send packages through the Postal Service than with UPS or Fed-Ex (Source D). I work at KFC and when people see a special or a coupon they pounce on it. The USPS just needs to send out coupons, have specials, and create incentives for those people who use the Postal Service. Run the service like a business. The USPS has come up with a clothing line, and that is a great idea.
