Ordinary Lives in North Korea

I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is quite a statement for me to make, considering the fact that I absolutely hate reading most books. Overall, this book continually reminded me of George Orwell's 1984. I specifically remember how much I enjoyed Orwell's dystopian fantasy. These type of novels seem very realistic and likely to occur. Because of human nature's love of power, leaders misuse their power constantly. Even the United States represents some of the invasive aspects represented in both of these books. Nothing to Envy brought Orwell's fantasy to life by presenting an actual scenario of how government can become a total authority of people's daily lives. The fact that Orwell's prediction was written in 1949 is extremely fascinating to me. At this time, the independent dictatorship of North Korea was just beginning to organize itself. Orwell had no way of knowing exactly what would occur under a real-world dictatorship. Surprisingly, his prediction was extremely accurate. Countless similarities arise in Derick's evaluation of North Korea. For example, Orwell predicted a secret government organization called the "thought police ". North Korea developed an almost identical organization referred to as the "inminban. " Both of these departments perform the exact same functions of secretly spying on all citizens and discovering those who may have false pretenses against the government and its will. Another relating feature is the class system in which people were organized. Identical to Orwell's dystopia, North Korea places its citizens in different classes based upon intelligence, and even more importantly, dedication to the party. The party could also be considered as a relating factor. Both of these governments' have parties in which people are forced to support and be involved in. The list of relations seems infinite. This real-world scenario of 1984 caused me to continually read Demick's story and compare the similarities.
