Ways of Seeing by John Berger

The painting focuses on a young female subject, wearing an almost see through dress that slips off her shoulders. She seems deep in thought because she is in a tranquil setting, gazing past the mirror with her hand on her chest, indicating that she is thinking about something very heartfelt.
When I first saw Sunbath, it was the same as the other paintings in the museum; it meant nothing to me and I almost passed by it. However, although it meant nothing to me I was still visually attracted to it; something about the way the short brushstrokes all smeared together but still formed a beautiful picture. I looked closer to examine the brushstrokes and then decided that I wanted to know more about this painting and talk to it. I sat down in front of it and just look at it for a little bit and had to really brainstorm about how this painting could possibly mean anything. At first glance it was just a woman sitting in her room. As I looked at it some more I started to get a feeling from this woman, she was not just sitting in her room, she was thinking about something very close to her. The more I examined the style of the painting such as the color palette, I discovered that the lighting in the painting was extremely relevant to the meaning of the painting. Rather than having to force myself to think of questions that I wanted to ask this painting, it started to bring the questions out of me and suddenly I had so many and I wanted to know everything about this painting.
The woman's thoughtful expression and Miller's use of color creates a calming tone, which intrigues me because I feel like the title Sunbath does not capture the amount of feeling in this painting. That being said, it makes me question if she is only sitting in her room thoughtless while the sun illuminates herself and her room, or if the woman is caught deep in thought with the sun being a small factor in the meaning of this painting, contradicting the title Sunbath.
