This unit on sexual orientation was very educative and beneficial, in the sense that I became more knowledgeable on what sexual orientation entails, and also a few related terms that will aid to expand my vocabulary. My personal definition of a few of the terms were as follows, homosexuals people who choose to develop sexual relationships with the same sex, heterosexual people who choose develop sexual relationships with the opposite sex and bisexual person who choose to be in intimate relationships with both. From this unit I learnt that my definition was to an extent incorrect, because according to (Williams 2006) no one was given a choice to choose sexual orientation as these are things that are erotically develop from inside in which the individual has no control over. Hence one as very little control as it relates their sexual orientation because it is something developed from the inside. .
Sexual orientation may be defined as the directionality of one's sexual interest towards members of the same sex, the other sex, or both (Rathus 2011). Prior to the completion of this unit I thought that most homosexuals actually made the decision/choose to become a gay male or lesbian which is not always the case. I learnt that sexual orientation not only referred to homosexuals but also heterosexual and bisexuals. I have come to critically analyze and realize that sexual orientation is most often something felt from inside where one develops erotic attraction to the other sex, same sex or both. .
I learnt that sexual orientation can be classified into three major categories which arre based on erotic attraction which includes homoerotic which mean developing heteroerotic and bi-erotic (Mosher 2005). Most often sexual orientation and gender identity is misunderstood because, I personally taught that both were actually the same, but now I know that sexual orientation refers to what gender one is erotically attracted to while gender identity refers to one's anatomic sex as stated by (Bailey 2003).
